Cyclone, EcoBoost, Voodoo, and Predator will be history in Mustang's books

When Ford unveiled its first electric SUV, the Mach-E, with 'Mustang' in it, people lost their minds. The pony badge belongs to a rich heritage of loud, roaring muscle cars that has built a legacy of its own over the decades. Many of us kind of accepted it since it was a new model with the Mustang badge and not a replacement.

However, this new report has ticked us off again. According to Autoline Daily, the Mustang is going to go all-electric starting 2028. Nope, it won't be sold alongside the regular, rear-wheel-drive, V-8-powered pony. It will be the end of an era. I'm not crying, you're crying.

The 40-odd second bit from the video, starting at 4:30, reports that AutoForecast Solutions believes the Ford Mustang will be electrified by December 2028. That is when the next-gen Mustang will go into production. Mind you, the current-gen was launched in 2013, so it will be a 15-year run for the present Mustang.

It seems a little odd because the upcoming Mustang was listed in a job post on Linkedin which referred to it as "Ford 2023 Mustang S650". This meant the 2023 Mustang would arrive sometime in 2022, and it was even spied a few times by carparazzis.

One logical hunch would be that Ford is probably going in with a heavy facelift in the coming year, but the S650 is probably reserved for 2028? The best guess would be that the next-gen Mustang is coming next year and the electric Mustang will be a new generation after the S650. There was news of a 6.8-liter, pushrod V-8 finding its way under the Mustang's hood not too long ago. These predictions and rumors are clashing incomprehensibly.

Electrification is inevitable and we know that internal combustion engines will go extinct at some point in the future. Seeing the beloved monikers being killed this way hurts. Knowing that there is a deadline, even if it's almost eight years away, feels like a death clock dangling in front of you. And the Mustang isn't the only car here.

According to an old scoop from Muscle Cars & Trucks, GM scrapped the plans of a seventh-gen Camaro. However, a Camaro EV could be in the works. Even the Dodge Charger and Challenger will be electrified, probably through mild-hybrid systems soon. This is something that FCA might bring across its brands.
