Top five bike debuts of India Bike Week 2017

Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster

Triumph unveiled its Bonneville Speedmaster at the fest with much fanfare. The cruiser-style bike is built around the same 1200 CC parallel-twin engine seen on the T120 and Bonneville Bobber that produces 103 horsepower and 106 nM of torque. Though it has same electronic features of the Bobber such as riding modes, the 2018 Speedmaster comes with cruise control. Unlike the Bobber, the latest Bonneville has a pillion seat and grab-rail - both of which can be removed. The Speedmaster has a bigger 12-litre tank for greater touring potential.

Braking duties are handled by dual 310mm disc brakes up front and a single 255mm disc with single-piston Nissin Caliper at the rear. ABS comes standard. The bike features a classic 'nacelle' styled headlight with LED daytime running lights, swept back beach bars, forward pegs, fixed rear mudguard and 16" wire spoked wheels. Triumph will start delivery of the new Speedmaster from February 2018 onwards. Prices is likely to be under Rs 15 lakh.

All the good ones

India Bike Week is touted as Asia's largest bike fest and for many motorcycle manufacturers it is the perfect opportunity to present their newest models to a frenzied crowd. This year was no different and firms were launching their new products back-to-back. Here are five debuts we got stoked on:

BMW RnineT Racer

We have kept this last only because for most of you, this bike is no stranger. The R nineT Racer is a gorgeous cafe-styled boxer-twin and shares most of the features of its siblings. The air/oil-cooled 1,170 cc engine produces an output of 81 kW (110 hp) at 7,750 rpm for a highly dynamic power delivery, even at low speeds. The exhaust system has an electric servomotor and an acoustic valve for that sonorous boxer sound.

The sporty riding character of the new BMW R nineT Racer is reflected in the suspension geometry, which is geared towards light-footed handling, a neutral cornering response, a high level of directional stability and above all riding fun on winding roads. The retro-classic is priced at Rs 17.30 lakh, (ex-Delhi).

2018 Indian Scout Bobber

2018 Indian Scout Bobber

Last year, when Triumph announced the launch of its Bobber, hard-core bike enthusiasts didn't take the news well as they believed a factory cannot make a custom Bobber. However, the sales figure showed otherwise and Bonneville Bobber became an instant hit. It was the most niche and only model in the market, but only until now.

Indian Motorcycle fans were waiting for the launch of Scout Bobber and that happened at this year's IBW. The bike has a distinctive appeal with its black headlight nacelle, coupled with minimal engine covers and vented exhaust shields. The bike's two-toned genuine leather seat, complements the shiny front and rear chopped fenders while the Kenda K761 knobby tires completes that menacing look. The bike's 1133 CC, liquid cooled, V-Twin engine mated to a six-speed transmission produces 94hp and 97Nm of torque. The Scout Bobber has got a shorter rear suspension, reduced ground clearance (123mm) but the handlebars and pegs are 38 mm closer for that ideal easy riding position. The bike is up for grabs at Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India).

Indian Motorcycle

Avantura Choppers

India has a huge chopper fan base and for years they have been stripping down their Royal Enfields to make their mean machines. But they were always underpowered. To fill the desires and needs of chopper fans, bunch of people from Mumbai have started the country's first and only production Chopper motorcycle brand.

Avantura Choppers, co-founded by bike enthusiasts Gaurav A Aggarwal and Vijay Singh, has signed deals with global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) S&S, Mustang & Kellermann, to import components for two its models - Rudra and Pravega. Both the bikes, launched at Rs 23.90 lakh Rs 21.40 lakh respectively (ex-showroom, Mumbai), share the same engine specs. The only noticeable difference apart from the looks are on the fuel tank capacity. While Rudra has a 17 litre capacity, Pravega can hold an extra four litres of fuel.

"The bikes were made one year ago. We spent the last one year just to get clearance from authorities," Vijay Singh said from his neatly set up display centre at the IBW. The firm says the choppers are built for Indian road conditions. To fulfill this, Avantura Choppers roped in Kevin Alsop (Founder of Big Bear Choppers, USA) as its Chief Design Engineer. The firm hopes to start deliveries as soon as certifications are in order.
